Private hospitals warn of more closures after Labor refuses bailout
Private hospitals say they are on a knife-edge after a Labor government review of the $22 billion industry found their margins had almost halved in five years as costs rose faster than revenue, warning more closures are imminent without urgent government help.
Health Minister Mark Butler on Friday rejected calls to bail out struggling hospitals, instead urging feuding operators and insurers to sort out their differences and come up with solutions themselves.
