Mark Arnold, chief investment officer Hyperion Asset Management, did so much analysis of Google to work out the threat it presented to his most valuable portfolio holding, REA Group, that he ended up investing in the company.

It was the same deal with e-commerce and cloud computing company, Amazon. Mr Arnold's analysis of the risks to Hyperion's holding in Woolworths from Amazon meant he ended up selling his firm's stake in the country's biggest grocery chain and bought shares in the NYSE-listed retail giant instead.
