Corporate activity has injected some excitement in an otherwise gloomy mining sector as most stocks in this space gave up gains from Friday morning to trade in the red.

Chinese-owned Minmetals Resources has engineered a friendly takeover Canadian- and Australian-listed copper producer Anvil Mining , valuing the company at around $C1.3 billion ($1.31 billion).
