It's widely conceded that ANZ Bank has done a commendably good job in side-stepping the scandals that claimed the scalps of so many senior bankers over the past few years.

All the same, there's mounting speculation in banking circles that ANZ's impeccably connected chairman, David Gonski, who marks his sixth year in the role this month, is likely to step down from the board sometime this year.
