The protracted, often farcical and sometimes bizarre takeover bid by exploration minnow Fairstar Resources for iron ore junior Golden West Resources has come to an end.

On a fitting note for an offer that has taken so many unlikely turns, the Fairstar bid closed on Wednesday night with the predator holding fewer shares in its prey than it did more than five months ago.
