The chief executive of Cooper Energy has questioned why the Victorian government is waiting until the middle of next year to lift the ban on drilling conventional gas reserves, given the push for a gas-led economic recovery.

The Andrews government introduced new laws into Parliament on Tuesday to allow an "orderly restart" of drilling conventional gas reserves from July 2021, but a temporary ban on fracking and coal seam gas would be made permanent.
