Santos is expected to bear the brunt of a ban slapped by the Queensland government on new gas production in the Lake Eyre Basin, a decision that has been welcomed by environmental groups but has triggered warnings from suppliers about blackouts and higher prices.

The unexpected announcement on Friday by new Queensland Premier Steven Miles and Environment Minister Leanne Linard rules out future oil and gas production in the rivers and floodplains areas of the Lake Eyre Basin, along with the extraction of unconventional gas.
