Wholesale electricity prices roughly doubled in the December quarter amid a pre-summer squeeze on the NSW and Queensland grids. The cost increase has stoked concerns about the risk of a fresh jump in retail prices for cash-strapped households.

NSW bore the brunt of the surge, with average prices spiking 134 per cent from the December 2023 quarter, according to analysis by the University of NSW.
