NSW extends CSG licence freeze

The NSW government has shrugged off criticism about the slow pace of development of its coal seam gas resources with an extension of a freeze on petroleum exploration licences.

Just days after being urged by Canberra to remove hurdles to onshore gas development, the NSW government has instead extended a freeze on new petroleum exploration licences, adding to the frustrations of the oil and gas sector.

The six-month ban on new licence applications put in place on March 26, which was due to end on Thursday, will be lengthened for another 12 months, said NSW’s Minister for Resources and Energy, Anthony Roberts .
