Controversial Labor heavyweight Jim Soorley is departing as chairman of CS Energy, amid ongoing delays to a crucial coal-fired power station and increased scrutiny over his private sector roles.

The Australian Financial Review can reveal Mr Soorley, a former Catholic priest and Brisbane lord mayor, is standing down from the $96,000 a year role, four months before the end of his third term at the state-owned energy company.
