At ATCO’s operations centre surrounded by bushland about 20 kilometres from the Perth CBD, some modest-sized buildings and a couple of white metal units are to the right of the front gate. A small house made up of two converted dongas – complete with grass front yard – is to the left.

Appearances really are deceiving. The area’s official title is ATCO’s Clean Energy Innovation Hub, opened in 2019. It is key to the Canadian-owned company’s hopes of becoming a major player in Australia’s green energy future focused on hydrogen.
