France's Total plots entry into electricity retailing

French energy major Total is preparing to launch into Australia's electricity retailing sector with a focus on large industrial and government customers, in a significant expansion of its existing sole role as a power supplier to its part-owned GLNG venture in Queensland.

The move follows supermajor Shell's recent entry into the same sector, which was accelerated through the surprise $617 million takeover of business power retailer ERM Power last year.
