CEOs: It’s more than survival of the fittest

Being a boss in Australia has never been tougher. Increased scrutiny on performance from investors jaded by profit warnings and write-downs, combined with the perils of navigating a rapidly changing global economy means chief executives who don’t perform are quickly shipped out.

Being a boss in Australia has never been tougher. Increased scrutiny of performance from investors jaded by profit warnings and write-downs, combined with the perils of navigating a rapidly changing global economy, means chief executives who don’t perform are quickly shipped out.

An Australian CEO now has an average lifespan of just over four years – well below the seven-year lifespan for a North American CEO, while nearly a quarter of CEOs working for S&P/ASX 200 companies lost their jobs in 2011, according to consultancy group Booz.
