French company Areva has come to the defence of uranium explorer Summit Resources with a $292.6 million investment offer valuing the company well above a hostile bid from Paladin Resources.

The Paris-listed energy group - the world's third-biggest uranium miner with a market capitalisation of $45 billion - will initially buy 9 per cent of Summit for $121.1 million to become its biggest shareholder.
