On the surface, Brazilian meat giant JBS’ $425 million bid for ASX-listed salmon farmer Huon Aquaculture couldn’t be simpler. A cash bid after a competitive process for a company with volatile earnings and escalating environmental and social issues, unanimously recommended by the board.

But the reality is far more complex. And the true battle for Huon is taking place in Canberra, the fact of which JBS, mining billionaire Andrew Forrest and Canada’s Cooke Seafood are all intensely aware.
