Fortescue’s rapid transition from miner to would-be green giant has seen it pay a big price to get its hands on battery technology bred by an icon of Formula One.
As anyone who has watched the brilliant Netflix documentary Drive to Survive knows, there’s something endlessly fascinating about the inner workers of the Formula One business. Big money, big egos, cool technology – just being close to that world carries a certain cache.
So, you can expect that Fortescue Metals Group’s purchase of Williams Advanced Engineering, a company founded by the late F1 impresario Sir Frank Williams and still part-owned by his grand prix racing team, will gather plenty of headlines.
