The big result | If you needed a reminder that profit season is all about the windscreen and not the rearview mirror, insurance giant IAG provided it on Thursday.

The numbers were good: cash earnings surged 54.2 per cent in the December half to $640 million, about 6 per cent above market expectations, thanks to good weather and cost-cutting during the period.
