There’s a revolution going on inside BHP

Chief executive Mike Henry has been telling us for years that the Big Australian has to change. The turning point has now arrived.

BHP might have its historic roots in Broken Hill, but for at least the last two decades it’s Western Australia that’s been the centre of the miner’s universe.

The profits pouring out of BHP’s iron ore mines in the Pilbara have long underpinned investor returns and filled the tax coffers of the West Australian and federal governments. As recently as 2021, more than 70 per cent of BHP’s earnings were generated in the iron ore division.
