The RBA suddenly looks late on rates

The jump in the jobless rate appears to have all but locked in a rate cut in August, after the RBA shocked the market by holding last week.

The very thing the Reserve Bank of Australia feared appears to be coming to pass. And suddenly, the central bank looks behind the eight-ball.

On July 8, as the RBA shocked the market and economists by keeping rates on hold at 3.85 per cent, governor Michele Bullock warned that there was a real risk that a slower improvement in household consumption could result in “a sharper deterioration in the labour market than currently expected”.
