Patriotism, Samuel Johnson famously said, is the last refuge of a scoundrel. In the private health wars, it seems to be the first port of call when tensions flare.

On Friday, after private hospital operator Healthscope took the unprecedented step of telling a group of health insurers led by Bupa that it would terminate their agreements and expose customers to higher out-of-pocket payments, the company was magically transformed.
