Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce must have known that the hastily convened Senate select committee into the cost of living would turn out to be a cross between a circus and a show trial. But that didn’t stop him sticking his hand out.

Airfares are coming down, Joyce said, but they could fall faster if the national carrier got a little more help from the government.
