Cane farmer exposes sugar debacle

A German-owned sugar milling company in north Queensland has been blamed for costing a farmer $500,000 in income because of poorly maintained infrastructure.

Cane grower Les Durnsford knows the sugar industry in north Queensland better than most, thanks to his family’s 94-year ownership of a property at Yalbaroo, about 60 kilometres north-west of Mackay.

He also knows how well a farming co-operative can function because his father was heavily involved in the co-op that owned the nearby Farleigh sugar mill.
