Australia’s retail sector is a small world, so the poaching of Premier Investments executive John Cheston as CEO of cheap jewellery giant Lovisa was always going to raise eyebrows.

Lovisa is chaired by Brett Blundy, who also owns a big stake in the $2.5 billion group. Premier is chaired by majority shareholder Solomon Lew; Cheston runs the Smiggle chain, which has been a key growth engine of Premier for a decade.
