Steve Donohue was almost sacked on his first day at Dan Murphy’s.

The chief executive of Endeavour Group, who now oversees 276 Dan Murphy’s stores and 354 pubs, joined the bottle shop in 1994 when it had just two stores in inner Melbourne, and was still run by founder Daniel Murphy and his right-hand numbers man, Tony Leon.
