The August profit season has delivered a confusing picture of an economy stuck between cycles. Here are 30 nuggets to help investors navigate this tricky environment.
Geoff Wilson, chairman and founder of Wilson Asset Management, has seen plenty of cycles during his 40-plus years in markets. But as the August reporting season draws to a close, he finds it fascinating – and understandable – that chief executives are having a hard time pinning down exactly where we are in this cycle.
Results for the 2024 financial year held up reasonably well, with more beats than misses. But the pain of higher interest rates is now starting to emerge: guidance for 2025, and trading in the early part of the new financial year, was weak, especially when adjusted to inflation.
