Economist and former Fair Pay commissioner Ian Harper will be announced on Thursday as the head of the Abbott government’s competition review.

As flagged two weeks ago by The Australian Financial Review, Professor Harper will lead the panel in a 12-month investigation into the power of big-business near monopolies such as Coles and Woolworths .
