Ken MacKenzie has won the race to succeed BHP Billiton chairman Jac Nasser, with the company announcing his appointment on Friday morning following a board meeting in Chile.

Mr MacKenzie, who has been a BHP board member since September 2016 and is the former chief executive of packaging giant Amcor, is understood to have beaten fellow directors Lindsay Maxsted and Malcolm Broomhead for the top job.
