Project Spring, the secret codename given to Amcor's $9.2 billion buyout of United States packaging group Bemis Company, has elevated a staid Melbourne company to the epicentre of global financial markets.

But it also severed a link to the group which began with a paper mill on the banks of the Yarra River.
