The High Court has scorched the arguments of former Greens senators Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters, grilling their barrister over whether the duo were asking for a "vindication" of their actions in resigning from Parliament.

Mr Walters said his clients were "criticised as being negligent in failing to check" their foreign citizenship status, but he said their resignation on discovering their status was appropriate because ignorance was not an excuse.
