Lawyers have identified family law reform and defending the rule of law as priorities for the incoming Attorney-General Christian Porter, as the outgoing George Brandis prepares to move to the United Kingdom to replaceAlexander Downer's job as Australia's next high commissioner.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced on Tuesday as part of the Cabinet reshuffle the Western Australian MP and current social services minister Christian Porter will take the chief law officer job.
