Energy Minister Angus Taylor will on Thursday call for interest from power plant investors in the federal government's underwriting measure to encourage new "firm" generation, with life extensions of existing coal and gas plants among those eligible for support and no ruling-out of existing large generators.

The swift move reflects the Morrison government's resolve to put in place initial contracts that support new coal, gas or hydropower plants before the federal election, due by next May.
