It was not the moment to be brave. After the final report of the Hayne royal commission saved its most savage criticism for NAB's top leadership, the bank went for the safest option, within close proximity.
In choosing the 62-year-old Philip Chronican to be its acting chief executive on Thursday, replacing Andrew Thorburn, NAB has picked an industry veteran.
