The blockchain has gone viral. Only a year ago, casual mention of the esoteric concept may have been met with a blank stare; now, it seems the blockchain is omnipresent, a topic many people are expected to have considered and have a view about.

In just the past month, two of the most influential global business magazines carried cover features on the blockchain, a distributed ledger that enables transacting in bitcoin, a cryptocurrency.
