As banana growers in far north Queensland set out on their three-day wheelbarrow race on Friday they are sweating over a bigger challenge than the next 140km.

Growers of Australia's number one supermarket seller are being forced to offload bananas below cost, some at as little as $1 a 13kg box. And that's the ones they are not leaving on the ground.
