ETFs are surging but stock pickers are still winning funds

The surge in demand for passive exchange traded funds and the failure of a third of the long only Australian active equity funds to beat the market over the past year has raised doubts about the worth of stock pickers.

Investors are questioning why they should pay between 80 and 120 basis points in annual management fees to an active equities manager when one in three managers is being beaten by a passive ETF with fees of about 20 basis points.
