A week after Chinese authorities raided the homes of Crown Resort's sales and marketing team in China and detained 18 of its staff, the theories about why the Australian gaming giant was targeted have come full circle.

When news of the detentions broke on Friday, the immediate assumption was the Crown employees had been caught up in the country's anti-corruption campaign under President Xi Jinping.
