We teach children about acceptance, coach them not to fight back or be easily provoked, but sometimes it’s necessary to set the record straight, even as an adult. Recently Yassmin Abdel-Magied did just that, in relation to something deeply personal and yet public – her identity.
She is commonly referred to as a “controversial Muslim”. With this description, gone is her credibility as a mechanical engineer, her foresight as co-founder of Youth Without Borders and her honour of being a Queensland Young Australian of the Year in 2015.
