Why heavy vehicles should be banned on the South Eastern Freeway

Story: Dixie Sulda, Michael McGuire & Anna Vlach

On July 24, Channel 7 weather presenter Amelia Mulcahy was driving to the Adelaide Hills when she witnessed the 'unreal' aftermath of the crash at the busy Portrush and Glen Osmond intersection.

A truck had ploughed through the intersection crashing into multiple vehicles after failing to stop during its descent on the downtrack. Nine people were hospitalised.

It reminded me of that horrific crash in the same spot in 2014, except this time, in what you’d call nothing short of a miracle, everyone escaped serious injury... I’d be lying if I told you I’ll be able to comfortably sit at that intersection and feel completely safe anytime soon.

Five people had to be cut free from their vehicles.

The Liberals’ 2017 multibillion-dollar plan was to build a new 24-hour export airport at Monarto with heavy road and rail freight rerouted out of suburban Adelaide.

The SA Freight Council proposed a tunnel under the foothills behind Springfield that would take out the “nastiest part of the SE Freeway” — the intersection with Portrush, Glen Osmond and Cross roads, where there have been several fatalities.

The RAA's Highway Assessment advocated for upgraded signage, better ramps and proposed alternative routes to relieve pressure on the roadway. This too never came to fruition.

“The main point is to get more trucks off that freeway so they don’t have to come through that intersection."

Advocates in the Hills including Adelaide Hills mayor Jan-Claire Wisdom agree more investment is needed to reduce heavy vehicle traffic on the road.
