South Australia is at the centre of our nation’s defence industry capability. The state has a proud history of delivering Australia’s most complex defence projects, and it’s now extending this knowledge to lead a new era of defence innovation.
The AUKUS agreement has led to unprecedented opportunities in the state, boosting the economy and driving innovation. It will see up to 5,500 workers employed to design and build nuclear-powered submarines at the world's most advanced naval shipyard.
Chief Executive of Defence SA Matt Opie said “South Australia is at the forefront of the nation’s defence industry, driving innovation, research and development, workforce growth and overall defence capability.”
He said that in addition to world-class shipbuilding capability, South Australia’s defence strengths are tied to cutting-edge collaboration between industry and research, which has attracted seven of the world’s top 10 defence companies to the state.
As well as industry development, there has been significant investment in education pathways, which will build the capacity of our future workforce and give South Australians more opportunities for a career in a highly skilled, well-paid field.
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said he is thrilled the state is making the most of the defence opportunities. “AUKUS represents a once-in-a-generation economic opportunity for our state, but only if we seize it”.
