Iran's wave of deadly protests explained

Angry demonstrators have been arrested, killed and wounded during mass protests across Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini sparked outrage across the country.  

Social media has been flooded with videos of protest scenes in Iran as women cut their hair and burn their head scarves while men cheer for them. Here's what you need to know.

Who is Mahsa Amin?

Mahsa Amini, was arrested on September 13 for allegedly breaching strict hijab regulations. The head-covering worn by Muslim women has been law since Iran’s revolution in 1979.

Mahsa died three days later. Authorities said she died of a heart attack, releasing CCTV of her detained and appearing to collapse. But leaked scans showed a skull fracture caused by a severe trauma to the skull. Witnesses say she was beaten.

The official story of a ‘heart attack’ sparked a wave of protests across Iran. Protestors have clashed with police, and groups have been recorded chanting “we don’t want Islamic Republic” and “death to Khamenei”, Iran’s Supreme Leader.

Women have been at the heart of the protests, walking the streets without a head covering and cutting their hair in defiance of Iran's laws, which could see them jailed or beaten by morality police.

One female protestor, Hadis Najafi, filmed tying up her hair as she prepared to join protesters, is now among the dead, shot and killed by security forces, reports Iranian journalist Masih Alinejad.

The People’s Mujahedin Organisation of Iran says at least 100 protesters have been killed and 1800 people arrested in Tehran alone as protests rage in 31 provinces across the country.

With no legal right to protest, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has ordered riot police to “deal decisively” with protesters andIran’s Revolutionary Guard have vowed a harsh crackdown.

Many now question how long leaders can hold their position as outrage is shared by both the middle and lower classes. Experts say the crisis won’t be solved until the “inefficient and corrupt” regime implements reforms.
