Foot and mouth disease: what you need to know

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt

Australian authorities are on high alert after fragments of foot and mouth virus were found in pork products imported from China in a Melbourne supermarket and in an undeclared beef product carried by a traveller at Adelaide airport.

WHAT IS THE DISEASE?

FMD is a highly contagious virus that affects all cloven-hoofed animals including cattle, sheep, pigs and goats. It causes abscesses and ulcers to the mouth and foot that stop the animal from eating and walking.

How is it spread?

It can be spread through air, via feed lots, water, and through animal products like meat.

The virus can also be carried through soil, on vehicles, farming equipment, clothing and shoes.

WHY IS FMD A CONCERN?

A widespread FMD outbreak would be an $80 billion hit to the economy, as countries that are free of the disease ban or restrict imports from affected regions.

The Australian agricultural industry exports two thirds of everything it produces, according to the National Farmers Federation. If one animal in a herd contracts the debilitating virus, all will need to be euthanised.

BALI OUTBREAK

Indonesia notified the world of an FMD outbreak in May.

The number of Australians travelling to Bali has risen, sparking fears the increased traffic could bring FMD here.

On July 4, the virus was discovered in Bali.

WHAT IS BEING DONE?

Australia is donating one million doses of FMD vaccine to Indonesia to help stop the spread. Extra biosecurity staff are being put into mail centres and airports to detect contaminated items.

WHAT ABOUT TRAVELLERS?

Minister Watt said the risk of FMD entering via a traveller was low.Shoe sanitation mats are being rolled out at international airports and travellers from Bali have been urged to throw out their shoes before returning.

WILL BORDERS CLOSE?

Calls to shut Australia's border with Indonesia have so far been rejected by the government.

Livestock industry groups warn such a move would have devastating consequences for the economy and trade relationship.
