Commonwealth Games: Our top Aussie athletes

For generations the Commonwealth Games has been a springboard to global success for Australia’s best track and field athletes.

PREPARE FOR GLORY

Thirty-two years ago, a teenage Cathy Freeman laid the groundwork to become an Australian sporting legend.

These are the young guns who can follow in her path to greatness.

The Flying Mullet is Australia’s fastest man who became an overnight sensation at the Tokyo Olympics after winning his 100m heat. What can he do in this year's Games?

ROHAN BROWNING

Our new world champion! Won gold in the women’s high jump at the 2014 Glasgow Games at just 18, before nearly leaving the sport and missing the 2018 Gold Coast Games. She's back and better than ever.

ELEANOR PATTERSON

Captured the hearts of a nation with his Olympic semi-final victory and then gutsy fourth in the 800m final. Bol is back to that type of form breaking his own national record at the Paris Diamond League.

PETER BOL

Veteran wheelchair racer who has competed at five Paralympic Games. The 40-year-old won Commonwealth Games gold in the T53 1500m in Glasgow in 2014 and silver in the same event on the Gold Coast in 2018.

ANGIE BALLARD

The 2019 world javelin champion produced an extraordinary comeback in Tokyo claiming bronze. She almost missed making the final before producing a miracle with her last throw to get on the dais.

KELSEY-LEE BARBER

The 17-year-old rising sprint star who was the youngest member of the Tokyo team, narrowly missed a place in the T47 100m final (11.18sec). The Canberra-based runner is one of four teenagers in the Birmingham team.

JAYDON PAGE

The defending men’s pole vault champion has continued to mix it with the world’s best since his career breakthrough on the Gold Coast. Made the final in Tokyo.

KURTIS MARSCHALL
