Woman dies in Kersbrook crash, man badly hurt in separate smash near Mannum

A man has been charged over one of two fatal crashes in Adelaide this week, which occurred within about 12 hours of each other.

Two people have died in separate car crashes over the past 24 hours, with a fatal head-on collision in the Adelaide Hills and a crash at Mannum.

In the first crash, a man who survived the fatal crash has been charged after a 47-year-old woman died when her Ford ute collided head-on with his silver Peugeot station wagon.

Emergency services were called to the scene at South Para Rd near the township of Kersbrook just after 7.15pm on Tuesday.

The Hindmarsh Island woman was flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, but died shortly after arriving.

Karen Waters lives about 100m from the crash site and said the impact sounded like “something heavy falling off of a trailer”.

“(But then) I saw all the emergency vehicles coming, I knew it was serious,” she said.

“I’m sad, really upset (for the woman).”

The man, 44, was taken to Lyell McEwin Hospital with minor injuries.

Police on Thursday morning said the man had been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Traffic Services Branch officer-in-charge Superintendent Bob Gray said investigations into the crash were continuing.

“Anybody who behaves dangerously on our roads is incredibly selfish. Not only are they putting themselves at risk, they are putting innocent road users at risk,” Supt Gray said.

He said too many lives already had been lost during a poor start to 2020 on SA roads.

“People need to understand it’s not simply a life lost on our roads and a number,” Supt Gray said.

“There are massive consequences and a ripple effect when someone gets seriously injured or killed.

“It affects loved ones, it affects professions, it affects communities and quite often people never recover from what transpires.”

Police Minister Corey Wingard said motorists needed to start taking responsibility for their actions behind the wheel.

“It’s not acceptable. Everyone is doing all they can as far as building the infrastructure, as far as police being out there … everyone is fed up,” he said.

“These are lives lost on our roads. These are people not going back to their families.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either vehicle prior to the crash to please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.

Meanwhile, a man has died after crashing into a tree north of Murray Bridge on Wednesday morning.

The man, 68, of the Murray Mallee region, was driving north on Mannum Rd when he smashed into the tree, ripping it from its roots just before 8.30am.

Major Crash investigators examined the scene for several hours, with the road blocked between Wagenknecht and Salt Creek roads.

This year’s road toll is now 22, which is the same number of lives lost as this time last year.
