Police are appealing to motorists who can assist their investigation into a fatal crash near the Victoria and South Australian border earlier this month, that killed a Parafield Gardens truckie.

Detectives from Major Crash and the Heavy Vehicle Criminal Investigation Unit from Victoria Police put the appeal to the public on Monday morning, asking interstate truck drivers from SA and NSW with information or dashcam footage of the crash to contact them.

A B-double truck, being driven by Steven Lawrie, crashed into the back of a stationary truck about 2.20am Thursday, February 11, on the Western Highway at Serviceton. The stationary truck then collided with a B double truck in front of it.

All three trucks caught fire, and Mr Lawrie, 46, died at the scene.

The northern suburbs man has been remembered by friends as someone who “touched the lives of many”.

The death shocked the state’s transport community, and has prompted an inquiry by SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens, into border checkpoint operations.

Mr Lawrie crashed into the back of the stationary truck after snap border closures with Greater Melbourne caused a 1.5km queue on the high-speed highway.

The driver and passenger of the second truck, a 27-year-old man and a 63-year-old man, both from Western Australia, were taken to hospital after the incident but have since been released.

The driver of the third truck, a 50-year-old Victorian man, was uninjured.

“Investigators are appealing to truck drivers who may have witnessed the incident or have dashcam footage from the area around the time of the collision, to contact Crime Stoppers in Victoria at crimestoppersvic.com.au or call 1800 333 000
