Poisoning murderer Wendie-Sue Dent has challenged her murder conviction, insisting a jury that braved the COVID-19 pandemic to finish her case cannot be satisfied she is guilty.

Ahead of their client’s sentencing submissions next month, Dent’s counsel has filed paperwork with the Court of Criminal Appeal.

They have asked it overturn her conviction for murder and throw out the case which, if successful, would see her released from custody for the first time since July 2017. In their papers, Dent’s counsel argue the jury’s verdict was “unsafe and unsatisfactory and against the weight of the evidence”.

They also foreshadow their intent to expand their grounds of opposition prior to the appeal being heard.

Dent, 62, of Dapto in NSW, was last month found guilty of poisoning David Lawrence with her medication – including 20, 100mg tablets of morphine – to claim his $300,000 estate.
