A motorcyclist riding with L-plates is fighting for life after colliding with a 4WD at White Hill, near Murray Bridge on Wednesday morning.

The rider, a 27-year-old Murray Bridge man, was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries after he crashed into a Toyota Landcruiser towing a horse float on the Old Princes Highway about 6am. The motorcycle was bearing L-plates.

Major crash investigators attended the scene on Wednesday morning, while emergency services also responded to a crash at Northfield, where a car flipped on to its roof.

Officer in charge of traffic, Superintendent Bob Gray, issued a safety warning following the crashes.

“That’s the thing with lives lost and serious injury crashes. It’s not just a number, it’s somebody’s brother, it’s somebody’s husband, it’s somebody’s loved one,” he said.

“People who survive with serious injuries, they can have catastrophic changes to their lives.”

Superintendent Gray also announced a new crackdown on distracted drivers ahead of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

There have been eight lives lost on SA roads over the past five October long weekends, as well as 48 serious injuries

Last year, three people died on the same weekend.

“Our evidence tells us that over five years, October as a month is one of the two worst months of the year on South Australian roads,” Superintendent Gray said.

“And it’s probably because you’ve got the long weekend (and) you’ve got school holidays embedded in that.”

Police will be targeting the “Fatal Five” offences for the month of October – drink and drug driving, speeding, distraction, seatbelts and dangerous driving.

Superintendent Gray said distraction was the biggest contributor to road deaths over the last five years.

“I don’t have to stand here and tell you the catastrophic effect that a serious injury or a life lost can have on families … and communities.”
