An elderly man has died and his female passenger has sustained serious injuries after crashing into a tree and sparking a fire at Gumeracha in the Adelaide Hills.

Police said the pair was travelling north on Kenton Valley Road, where their car hit a tree and ignited a fire at 2.15pm on Wednesday.

The occupants had to be pulled from the car, which was destroyed in the blaze.

An 81-year-old Modbury man who was driving the car died at the scene.

His passenger – a Modbury woman, 77 – was flown to Royal Adelaide Hospital, where she remained in a stable condition on Wednesday night.

The man’s death takes the number of lives lost on SA roads to 81, compared with 101 at the same time last year.
