A home belonging to “collectors” in Adelaide’s northeastern suburbs has been destroyed after it went up in flames on Tuesday morning.
Flames quickly spread through the home on Shelduck Court, Wynn Vale just before 9.30am – fuelled by clutter inside.
Thick, black smoke was sent billowing across Wynn Vale and surrounding suburbs after the fire started on Shelduck Court just before 9.30am.
The Metropolitan Fire Service said more than 30 firefighters responded to the blaze, while an advice message was put in place for nearby residents.
People with respiratory issues were advised to remain indoors and close all windows until the smoke passed.
No one was home at the time of the blaze, which caused the roof of the home to collapse and took an hour to control. Crews stayed at the scene for several hours mopping up hot spots with a combined aerial appliance.
The fire destroyed the house but firefighters were able to save a neighbouring property worth $500,000.
Local MFS commander Robert Fraser said the owners of house “may be collectors of sorts”, as there was a high fuel load inside.
“There was just a lot of contents inside and outside the dwelling, which is why we are still here some hours later,” he said.
“When you got a lot of contents, fires in houses get going very quickly and timber-framed homes and the roof invariably collapses as you can see here.”
Several birds perished in the blaze. Fire Cause Investigators were examining the scene on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, MFS and CFS crews have fought a grass fire at Loxton, which started near Bookpurnong and Anderson roads about 9.45am.
A patch of grass about 100m by 120m was burnt, while a paddock of crops nearby was saved.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a family-of-five escaped from their Colonel Light Gardens home after it went up in flames.
Neighbours said the home was sold to the family earlier this year.
Fire-cause investigators were examining the scene on Tuesday morning.
