Family loses house, beloved dog in Morphett Vale blaze captured on CCTV

A man has been treated in hospital after running out of a burning house with a flaming jerry can, in dramatic scenes captured on CCTV. His beloved pet dog died in the inferno.

Fire rips through Morphett Vale home

A southern suburbs family has lost everything, except the clothes on their back, after a fire tore through their home, killing a beloved pet dog.

The blaze started from a cooking accident in the kitchen of their Morphett Vale home on Brigalow Rd in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Travis Page, 16, said his friend alerted him to the fire just before 5am.

“I looked up and saw black smoke … I just legged it out of the house,” he said.

“I had to run out of the front door while it was on fire.”

Sadly, the family’s dog, an English Staffy called Rogue, died in the blaze.

One occupant, Dylan, tried to run back inside to save the dog, but was forced out due to the ferocity of the flames.

“He tried to run back into the house and then he came back, (because) there was too much smoke,” Mr Page said.

“Everything is replaceable, but pets is something that can’t be replaced.”

The occupants quickly ran to neighbouring properties, knocking on doors and alerting them to the danger.

More than 25 MFS firefighters rushed to the scene and controlled the blaze in about 10 minutes.

Mr Page believes the fire started in a kitchen, where a jerry can caught alight.

CCTV footage shows Dylan running in the front yard with the burning jerry can.

He suffered burns to his hand and was taken to hospital for treatment.

By daylight, the jerry can was seen on the roof of the home – confusing the occupants, who say they don’t know how it ended up there.

The damage bill for the home was estimated at $200,000.
