US TIP-OFF LEADS TO SA MAN’S ARREST
A tip-off from the United States has led to the arrest of a South Australian man on child-abuse material charges.
The United States National Center for Missing and Exploited Children alerted Australian Federal Police to a suspected SA user uploading content to social media.
AFP said the material depicted a young girl engaging in a sexually suggestive act.
The SA Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team allege the account was linked to a 56-year-old man and searched his home, where child-abuse material was found on electronic devices.
The man was charged with possessing child abuse material obtained or accessed using a carriage service. He will appear in Port Pirie Magistrates Court on Monday.
The maximum penalty for the offence is 15 years’ imprisonment.
Australian Federal Police Detective acting Superintendent Gavin Stone said police worked tirelessly to protect children and bring to justice anyone who preyed on them.
“The children who are forced into these unimaginable situations are continually re-victimised through every access and share of the content online,” Superintendent Stone said.
“Anyone who views this material shows a complete disregard for the emotional and physical trauma that these children experience and is complicit in the physical abuse.
“Potential offenders should be warned that law enforcement agencies around the world work together to pursue anyone who seeks to harm children.”
SA Police Detective Superintendent Mark Wieszyk said it was committed to identifying people responsible for accessing and making available child-abuse material available.
“Working together with the AFP, our investigators aim to stop the exploitation of children and to rescue as many children as possible from this abhorrent crime,” Superintendent Wieszyk said.
Anyone with information about people involved in child abuse and exploitation should contact Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.
